IBE S35x8k Expander

With its magnification factor of 1.6x the S35x8K Expander scales the Super-35 image up to maximum 46.4 mm which covers full-frame format (ø43.5 mm) and even the RED Dragon 8K format (46.3 mm).

During the design of the expander, special attention was paid to ensure a minimum of light falloff and a maximum imaging performance up to the edge of the larger sensors.

The S35x8K Expander is recommended for lenses with a max. aperture of T-stop of 2.0, providing the best performance at T2.8, with optimal resolution and sharpness.

The S35x8K (formerly S35xFF) is not compatible with mirror shutter cameras.
The S35x8K (formerly S35xFF) can be used with most S35 optics having a PL Mount.

Ideal combinations:

  • Angenieux Optimo 17 - 80 mm Zoom
  • Angenieux Optimo 24 - 290 mm Zoom
  • Angenieux Compact Optimo Zooms
  • Angenieux 17 - 102 mm Zoom
  • Angenieux 25 - 250 mm HR-Zoom
  • Fuji from T2.0
  • Canon from T2.0
  • Leica Summicron T2.0
  • Zeiss Zooms T2.0

IB/E EXPANDER

Large sensor sizes deliver beautiful pictures with interesting bokeh by the very shallow depth of field. However, the optics must cover these larger sensor formats in two different aspects.

Firstly, the light vignetting on the larger sensor must not be greater than 50 %, and on second the image quality must also be perfect up to the edge of the sensor. During the design of the expander, special attention was paid to ensure a minimum of light falloff and a maximum imaging performance up to the edge of the larger sensors.

IB/E OPTICS EXPANDER - EXTENDER

Distinction between expanders and extenders

The difference between an „EXTENDER“ and an „EXPANDER“ is the ability to increase the image circle of a lens. Extender only increase the focal length without increasing the image circle for larger sensor formats while Expanders increase the focal length and also the image circle. Expanders are thus more difficult to design and more expensive in manufacturing.

You dream of Summiluxes, Summicrons, Master Primes, Cooke 4 and 5 Primes and you wonder, “If only there was an optical attachment to use my treasured sets of S35 (18×24 mm) lenses to fill the entire Full Frame (24×36 mm).”

Thus IB/E OPTICS designed this S35 Expanders.

The movement towards larger format sensors, like RED Weapon 6K / 8K, Arri ALEXA65, etc., is still in progress. Larger sensors deliver the film-look and an interesting bokeh due to their very shallow depth of field. These new cameras require lenses that can cover the larger sensor sizes.

There are just not to many cinema primes and zooms that meet the requirements. At the moment of NAB 2016 there are just RED and Sony out there with large format cameras.

  • The Expanders can be used with most PL mount S35 optics
  • The Expanders are UMS PL mount, which allows to be used with other mounts such as standard UMS E and FZ Mark II
  • The Expanders are not compatible with mirror shutter cameras
